What can I do to protect my vision?

One in four people will develop cataracts over the age of 75. Cataracts are seen as a normal problem of aging however there are some ways to delay cataracts developing:

• It is recommended to wear sunglasses or a hat with a brim to block ultraviolet sunlight to protect eyesight
  

•  Smoking damages the eye - patients should stop smoking to prevent vision damage and complications after cataract removal
  

• Research suggests that good nutrition can help reduce the chance of developing cataracts. Green leafy vegetables, fruits, and other foods rich in antioxidants are strongly recommended.

• Diabetes can aggravate eye conditions and lead to the development of early cataracts.

For anyone who is aged 50 or older, a yearly eye examination is recommended to allow early diagnosis of a cataract.
