How is a cataract diagnosed?

To diagnose a cataract opthalmologists perform a complete eye examination consisting of three eyesight tests:

  • A chart test measures how well you see at various distances (visual acuity test)
  • Dilated eye exam. Drops are placed in your eyes to dilate pupils and the opthalmologist or optician examines the inside of the eye.
  • An instrument measures the pressure inside the eye (tonometry test)
As well as identifying if a patient has developed a cataract, tests will also be performed to determine the type of cataract and how far the cataract has developed
