What to ask before cataract surgery

To fully prepare for cataract removal surgery it is important patients share any concerns and ask any questions with the eye surgeon in the pre-surgery consultation. The list below are a guideline of the questions and concerns commonly asked before cataract surgery.

  • Which type of intraocular lens (IOL) is most suitable?

The opthalmologist will help patients choose between monofocle/multifocle lenses and can advise on advanced lenses such as LALs.

  • Can additional vision problems be cured at the same time?

It may be possible for opthalmologists to correct vision problems such as myopia during the cataract removal procedure by using a different type of IOL.

  • Will my existing vision problems affect the cataract surgery?
Patients with pre-existing vision problems should discuss these with the ophthalmologist before surgery
  • Will an existing health condition affect surgery?

Patients with existing health conditions such as heart problems or diabetes should inform the surgeon

  • Patients should inform the ophthalmologist of any prescription medications being taken to ensure these pose no risk of complications
