What is a Multifocal IOL?

When the cataract is removed, the natural eye lens is also removed. Eye surgeons replace the lens with an intraocular lens (IOL) that is either multi-focal or mono-focal.

A multi-focal IOL is a type of lens implant that adjusts to see objects at short or far distances; the eye is in focus for near and far vision at the same time.

Patients who wish to have improved vision at both close and far range of distance are advised to choose a multifocal intraocular lens. Prescription glasses or contact lenses may be needed post-surgery but many patients experience an improvement to the pre-cataract vision.
