Cataract extraction is a safe procedure performed thousands of times a year. There are few risks to cataract operations and problems after cataract removal are rare, but may occur. These problems can include :
- infection
- bleeding
- inflammation
- pain
- redness
- swelling
- double vision
Patients should not be alarmed if experiencing any of the above symptoms following cataract surgery - these minor side effects can be treated with eye drops.
A complication that may occur after cataract removal is posterior capsule opacification. Commonly known as a second cataract, opacification is easily treated with corrective laser eye surgery and does not cause permanent damage to vision.
Patients should discuss with their opthalmologist any concerns about the risks of cataract removal surgery.
